Jailbreaking Your iPhone 5

There’s good news for iPhone users who have not taken the time to update to the latest firmware. Hackers have developed a jailbreak program through evasiOn. This jailbreak works on mobile devices running iOS 6.0 to 6.1.2.

On February 4, 2013 a group of iOS hackers known as the Evad3rs team, released evasiOn, a jailbreak program that within the first four days was downloaded seven million times. It seems despite the pomp and circumstance surrounding the release of the iPhone 5, consumers are not completely satisfied with the Apple iOS.

Why Would You Want To Jailbreak Your iPhone 5?

Jailbreaking is all about giving you more control of your phone in order to maximize its value. Many users love the iOS platform, but can find it limiting because they are limited to Apple’s proprietary system. There are also certain apps you can’t download from the ITunes app store, and without a jailbreak, the inability to bypass the rigid security precautions frustrates consumers. Jailbreaking takes care of both of these problems. Here are five reasons to consider jailbreak iphone 5.

Reason #1 – You Are Not Confined to the iOS

You essentially give your phone an open operating system, which allows you to download apps through a framework like Cydia that previously required you to use an android device. Let’s take a closer look at some of the reasons people want to jailbreak their phone.

Here are a few of the most popular apps you can only access with a jailbroken iPhone 5.

biteSMS – a text messaging app that lets you maximize this function on your iPhone. For example, you can compose a new message without going back to the notification center.

CallBar – lets you make a phone call without having to go back to your Home screen.

CleverPin – allows you to keep your iPhone 5 unlocked while you are connected to a WiFi network without requiring a separate passcode.

iFile – adds the functionality of a desktop computer. You can unzip and zip files, install and share files, create folders, and share files using Bluetooth or WiFi.

Reason #2 – Tethering Gives You Even More Freedom

Another reason you may want to jailbreak your iPhone 5 is to get free tethering. Tethering can allow your iOS device to act like a wireless modem. You can then access the internet from a computer or another mobile device that is within range of your “network”. Pretty cool, huh? This is different than untethered jailbreaks.

Reason #3 – Personal Expression

Our smartphones are extensions of our personalities. Some of us may even name our phone. So jailbreaking makes sense because you have almost limitless customization options. Cydia has many themes that aren’t available through Apple. You should also check out WinterBoard. This app lets you customize your iPhone 5’s look and feel, including sounds.

Reason # 4 – iOS File System Access

When you jailbreak a phone you can “see the way the sausage is made”. Seeing inside the iOS file system lets you do things like, for example, installing an SSH (secure shell) client that lets you transfer data between, for example, your iPhone 5 and a home computer that is on the same network. This means you can use your iPhone to fix a corrupted file or install games on your home computer that are not available from iTunes.

Reason # 5 – You Can Change Your Wireless Providers

You have an AT&T phone. You prefer T-Mobile or Sprint. When you jailbreak your phone, you can switch between cellular providers by changing out the SIM card. One caveat: this only works on carriers that use the GSM wireless standard. So “unlocking” as this is called won’t work for older versions of Sprint or Verizon iPhones because they use the CDMA wireless standard. You also may be subject to the terms of the contract you sign which can make switching carriers unwise.

Reason #6 – You Can Get Freedom to Travel

If you travel to foreign countries on business or just like to travel overseas, you will be able to use your iPhone 5 without having to pay out the nose for the privilege. By jailbreaking your phone you can use your SIM card on virtually any available network while paying lower taxes from the providers who will now have to fight for your business.

Reason #7 – You Can Increase the Resale Value

Many people love the iPhone 5. But if they have a different wireless provider, your iPhone 5 becomes much less valuable. However, with a jailbroken phone, you can get a lot more potential buyers and therefore demand more as a resale value. It will essentially be open to any person regardless of their carrier.

What’s the Downside to Jailbreaking?

There are reasons why Steve Jobs rolls over in his grave at the thought of someone jailbreaking the iPhone 5.  A few of the most common risks to having a jailbroken iPhone are listed here.

Risk #1 – It’s Difficult to Block Apps That Contain Malware

This one is just a matter of common sense. If you are tearing down the security walls that Apple has built into the iPhone 5, you can install any app from any website. But this leaves your phone an inviting target for programs that contain malware. In fact, any documented malware on an iOS device has been on phones that have been jailbroken.

Risk #2 – Lack of Security

Sure conspiracy theorists will grumble about the power of Apple as a big brother, but with a jailbroken phone, you are actually making your phone less secure. Or maybe a better way to say it is you are making yourself more responsible for the security on your phone rather than Apple. The Apple iOS only allows secure apps. By giving other apps full access to your phone, you have no way of knowing if they will harm your iPhone 5.

Risk # 3 – Limited Anti-Virus Protection

The Apple iOS is like a fortress. It doesn’t require sophisticated anti-virus programs because it doesn’t allow harmful programs and apps into the system. When you jailbreak your iPhone 5, you may need to find anti-virus protection that is compatible with the Apple iOS, which may not be able to fix any viruses that you’ve invited into your system.

Risk #4 – Lack of Updates

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over but expecting different results. With the iPhone 5, updates will typically erase jailbreaks and corresponding apps. So if you update your iPhone 5, you will have to jailbreak your phone again and reinstall any apps that you had installed. Another update? Repeat the process.

Risk # 5 – You Might Lay a “Brick”

To “brick” a phone means to have it rendered unusable. Unfortunately the more you invite unauthorized apps to live on your iPhone 5 the more you are risking a bug which can crash your phone. Cydia provides a number of “safe” sources which you should stick to. If you’re going to download a suspect app, do your due diligence to ensure that there have been no reported problems.

Why Would Apple Allow This?

Technically, it doesn’t. They just haven’t made it illegal – yet. At least not in the United States. It still doesn’t mean that they are OK with it. In fact, Apple makes it clear that jailbreaking a phone will automatically void the manufacturer’s warranty. However, simple supply and demand tells you that pro-jailbreaking forces would come up with a response. Today, there are many third-party warranties that allow you to insure your iPhone 5 that has been jailbroken. This is because, according to one prominent third-party warrantor, it really doesn’t matter what a user does with the software as long as they don’t change the inside of the phone.

So How Do I Jailbreak It?

As “off the grid” as this market is, some providers are better than others. And by all means, you should choose a provider that charges a fee. Even a nominal fee is better than a free app. Many free apps are not worth it and since the paid apps are not expensive, why chance it? Here are three names that you should consider. All of them offer simplicity, compatibility with the latest iOS and that they work for all Apple devices.

evasiOn

A fast five minute download by one of the most recognizable names in the jailbreaking community. It’s simple to install and their site includes a lot of content to help walk you through the process.

Unlock

As its name implies, one of the key differences that this software offers is the ability to both jailbreak and unlock your iPhone. This means that in addition to being to install previously unavailable apps, you can “unlock” your phone to use it with any mobile carrier you desire because it removes the lock that comes with your phone that is under contract.

And, with Jailbreak Unlock you get a 30-day money-back guarantee. Plus, you get customer support. You can generally jailbreak the program in less than five minutes, so if speed is important to you, then this provider makes sense.

Apple Unlocker

A second name worth considering is Apple Unlocker. The process is a little longer, up to 15 minutes, but still very acceptable for most consumers. You will not be able to unlock your phone and you may find their customer service a bit slower since they do not offer online chat or a way to reach them by phone.

iJailbreak Tool

Similar to Apple Unlocker, iJailbreak Tool is very straightforward. It won’t unlock your phone and it takes longer than both put together – about 25 minutes. Reviewers have commented that the instructions are not as clear as they could be and their customer service is just OK.

Some Additional Tips

Once you’ve downloaded the software, here are some tips that will help you manually jailbreak your iPhone 5.

• Make sure you have created a backup of your device.

• Put your device in DFU mode to start the modification process. Select “Install SSH” option.

• Hold the power button down for five seconds and the home button for 10 seconds simultaneously. After you release the power button, continue to hold the Home button for an additional 15 seconds.

• When prompted in the main menu, select “Extras” option. Then select “Just boot”.

• If your iPhone reboots, it is an indication that it has been modified.
